Often couples have children from prior relationships and would like to make them feel included in their wedding. Maybe you have heard the term "famlly-moon". What does that mean? It is a destination wedding including the couple and their children. it is often a mix of children of the bride and groom (think Brady Bunch). Destination weddings typically take place in a casual setting, such as a beach or boat. This usually makes children feel more comfortable and happy to join in the celebration.
There are many ways to make children feel like they are a part of the ceremony. For instance, a new step-parent may want to say special vows to the child and even present a small gift. The most important thing is to be aware of your child's feelings and personality. Some children are shy and don't won't to be on display in front of other wedding guests. Also, children are sometimes hesitant about their parents new marriage. In that case, it may be best to keep things simple or even have a private acknowlegment in a different setting, not at the wedding. The new step-parent could take the child on a special "date" and express their intent in a more private manner.
Another great way to include children is the Sand Ceremony. Each child and parent has an individual container of sand. The individual containers are then poured by each person into a single container. This symbolizes a "blending" of families and hearts. It makes a great keepsake. You may either use containers of sand - each in a different color or, if you are having a beach wedding, you may use the sand at the beach.
Children also make great ring-bearers and bridemaids. Give them disposable cameras so they can capture all the special moments.
Destination weddings are a perfect family vacation and a great opportunity for the new family to bond in a relaxing atmosphere.
